Alpha Soda Kitchen & Bar has been an institution in Alpharetta for almost a century, but this classic Southern fare standby is seeking to prove that old dogs can learn new tricks. Alpha Soda began as a soda fountain in 1920 and went through multiple owners and iterations in the ensuing years, but the restaurant recently reopened following an extensive remodel and rethinking of its menu and concept. The result: a “cutting-edge” modern restaurant that reflects new Southern cuisine with a focus on “farm-to-fork Southern fusion.”
The kitchen is helmed by chef Daniel Marteny, formerly of Mill Kitchen & Bar in Roswell; the restaurateur behind the reinvention, Michael Clarke, has been involved in the Atlanta restaurant scene for over three decades at eateries such as Pano & Paul’s, Buckhead Diner and Del Frisco’s Grill. The concept behind the new menu seeks to blend traditional Southern cooking with new and innovative influences–specifically, combining traditional barbecue with cues from Korean and Vietnamese dishes.
The creative vision of Alpha Soda’s new team is apparent from the first course. Standouts include Grits Fritters that incorporate a savory-sweet bacon marmalade and Chicken Fried Ribs that draw on traditional Thai flavors. These bold and unique flavors carry through the entree course, with must-try dishes including an updated twist on traditional Chicken and Waffles, a Low Country Ramen that combines Southern flavors in a traditional Japanese format and Venison that adds a surprising sweet note with a rootbeer lacquer. Adding on cornbread popovers for the table is a decision you certainly won’t regret!
Alpha Soda remains in the location it has held since 1995 on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta. As part of its new look and cuisine, the restaurant has done away with breakfast hours and instead focuses its refreshed menu on lunch, dinner, and brunch.
